UC San Diego Receives $2.5 Million Gift to Honor Late Scripps Oceanography Director

For the past three years, Joy Frieman has been searching to find a suitable way to honor her late husband, Edward A. Frieman, former director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. Noting that, “Ed was one of the very early people to identify global warming,” Mrs. Frieman recently gave $2.5 million to endow a faculty chair and two fellowships in climate sustainability.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Appoints Chancellor to Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker today announced the appointment of 30 private sector, nonprofit and academic leaders—including UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla—to serve on the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NACIE). Selected from a pool of more than 200 accomplished applicants, the council members will offer recommendations for policies and programs designed to make U.S. communities, businesses, and the workforce more globally competitive.

UC San Diego Received Second Highest Number of U.S. Patents Issued in UC System

The University of California is first in the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents Ranking for 2015. The report, which was released today, is published by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO). The ranking utilizes data acquired from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to highlight the important role patents play in university research and innovation.

UC San Diego Composer Rand Steiger Named Holder of Conrad Prebys Presidential Chair in Music

Composer Rand Steiger, currently chair of the UC SanC Diego department of music, is known for pushing the boundaries and exploring the combination of classical instruments with digital audio processing. Throughout his diverse career he has composed for and conducted critically acclaimed concerts and recordings with distinguished ensembles both here and abroad. In support of his teaching, research and service activities, Steiger has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Conrad Prebys Presidential Chair in Music in the Division of Arts and Humanities.

UC San Diego LGBT Center Begins 15 Year Anniversary with Transgender Symposium

The UC San Diego Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center will begin a year-long celebration of 15 years on UC San Diego’s campus with a transgender symposium on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Student Services Center Multipurpose Room on the main campus in La Jolla.
